In a female rabbit, the process looks different. The genital opening is not on a tube but instead forms a small, flat, slit‑like flap or wedge shape. When you press above this flap, it may open slightly to show a vertical slit rather than a round hole. This slit is the vaginal opening, and its shape is a key sign that the rabbit is a doe. The female’s genital area usually looks flatter and more tucked in compared with the male’s protruding tube, and there are no testicles nearby. If you look at several rabbits of the same age, comparing a male with a female side by side can help you see this difference more clearly.

Even with this method, it can sometimes be hard to tell the sex of a rabbit, especially in very young kits or in rabbits with thick fur. If you are unsure, it’s a good idea to ask an experienced breeder or your veterinarian to double‑check. Taking a clear photo of the area and sending it to a trusted expert can also help you learn the visual differences over time.
